Methodology of Social Science and Historical Analysis (cosponsored by the Accounting History Association)

2020.02.06

As our 4th project of the Collaborative Platform, we had a lecture, “Methodology of Social Science and Historical Analysis” at Kyushu University Ito Campus East Zone Auditorium I on October 26th 2020 (Saturday).

ivents With Professor Keiichi Oishi (Faculty of Economics) as our host, we first had Professor Ide Seinosuke (the chairperson of the Collaborative Platform/ Faculty of Humanities) explain the purpose of this lecture, and then received a lecture from Professor Hiroyuki Hoshiro (Institute of Social Science, Tokyo University).

We received a lecture from perspectives such as the integration of social science and history, approaching econometrics from a periodization point of view, the overlapping of ontology and epistemology among social scientists and historians, the importance of causal inference for social scientists, and the reasons why historians pursue dense descriptions.

ivents We also had Mr. Koji Kokubu (Faculty of Humanities), Associate Professor Kiyoshi Eguchi (Faculty of Human-Environment Studies), Associate Professor Michihiro Yamguchi (Faculty of Law), and Professor Masayoshi Noguchi from the Accounting History Association (Tokyo Metropolitan University) debate on issues of historical analysis and the possibility of interdisciplinary research within Japanese modern history, history of education, Japanese legal history, and accounting history.

We had about 110 people from in and out of Kyushu University join this lecture. There were comments from the audiences such as “It was a very stimulating report” and “I wanted to hear more about the opinions of the debaters”, and there were also requests for commentators from pre-modern history and science fields to join the debate.

We would like to thank Professor Hoshiro for the lecture despite his busy schedule, and also to express our appreciation for the support of the Accounting History Association.
